Thank you Dream Builders

Now that the outdoor learning space is nearly finished Kauri class learnt how to write a thank you letter last week. We will give the letters to the builders when the come back tomorrow.

Building vocabulary

In Kauri class we have been building our word knowledge. We have been using phonetic sounds that we know to discover words we dont know. Some people used online dictionaries and thesauruses and other used old fashioned paper dictionaries. We found some cool short a sounding words like asteroid and atrocious.

Preparing for Powhiri

As we get closer to our enviri green/gold reflection day Whaea Kaiya has been teaching us about the protocols around powhiri. Whaea Kaiya showed us what the kaikoranga does and how visitors are welcomed onto the site.

Matai Bay

Kauri class have had an amazing activity week this week. We have seen ancient Kauri trees at Puketi Forest, learnt about the Treaty of Waitangi at Waitangi and been snorkelling with loads of fish at Matai Bay!

Outdoor learning Space

Yesterday ruma kauri had our first taste of the outdoor learning space. It was great hearing the cicadas and breathing fresh air, without any walls. Tomorrow we are writing letters to the builders to say thank you for such an awesome job.

Strange Day

Today was a strange day. We spent the day up the hill as a precaution because of the tsunami threat. While we were up there we thought we might as well do some maintenance. Thanks to the crew from Nikau who helped with fence strengthening and trap setting!

Outdoor Learning Space

This week the building work will be completed on the outdoor learning space. There are still some things to be done like the roof, pvc covers, shade sail, solar power and guttering to be done but we are confident it will be ready for our green/gold enviro reflection day on April 13th.

Independent Writing

This week students in Ruma Kauri have been doing independent writing samples for assessment. We were learning about narrative language features. The students produced some great work that they were really proud of.

Home Reading

This week we started new levelled reading groups in Ruma Kauri. Each group will have two or three books to take home to read through the week. They are photocopied so that students can highlight and practise words they get stuck on. Students can even take activitiy sheets home to share if they want.

Bee's wax

Today a new load of bees wax arrived thanks to Anne at Honeytrap in Kaitaia. She has been donating beeswax to the school and we really appreciate it!

Pest Capture

Today we caught our first pest in the duck pond area. It was only a mouse but we know there are more mice, rats and possibly stoats up there to catch. We have even seen eels so we need to get the hinake out again!

Pest tracking

The students in ruma kauri have been hard at work building and designing their tracking tunnels. Today we placed them in the pond area to see what footprints we can find!

whanau kauri

Today at Whanau Kauri we were discussing how to build a growth mindset in maths. My experts showed their parents how to test themselves and then reflect and set their next steps and how to work towards meeting their targets. It was a great session and everybody left with a smile, despite being tested!
