Kauri class rat trap stations

Toady, after Kauri class had set our traps we decided on the best places for them to catch pests. After we placed them, we plotted the coordinates into our database here.

Enviro Day

Today we had our first enviro day for a while. It was great fun. We set our new rat traps, gave them a code and placed them in their new locations. We are using trap.nz to store the pest kill information on a national database.

Once we had done that we gave Puriri and Kowhai class a talk on caring for the ducks. We had some great questions. Mrs Bates kindly took a group from Kauri class to cook up the latest batch of eggs. They made enough to feed three classes!

Our first scrambled duck egg for breakfast club

Today was a special day because we got to eat our first batch of duck eggs.

Cory, Luke and Tyler helped to collect the eggs. Then they gave them to Taz, Lyrik and Peter to cook.

First they cleaned the eggs, then they placed them in a bowl of water to see if they sank (this means that they are fresh).

Then Lyrik cracked the shells and carefully placed the egg yokes in a bowl.  After that they whisked the eggs and mixed in milk, cheese and pepper. We microwaved the mixture, while removing to stir occasionally.

Only 5 eggs fed around twenty students. It was great having Mr Pickard and Mrs Bates helping as well.  Well done everybody!

Duck eggs

Cory invited his whanau to school over the weekend to show them our ducks. They went on an egg hunt and discovered where they have been laying!

Here are the students celebrating the first egg we have collected!  We still have some way to go before we have scrambled eggs on the breakfast club menu!

Learning Together

Yesterday for our Learning Together we made weather vanes in Kauri class.  The students did really well in a short time to make their weather vanes in their groups and then predict and use their weather vanes to show the wind direction.

Creating timelines

Yesterday Kauri class learnt about time lines because we wanted to show historic time events in order. Mr A showed us a timeline on the board of key moments in the history of guitar rock. We created google slides and embedded videos from youtube to make it more interesting!

School Production - Kia Kaha Kiwi

Today we did our school production - Kia Kaha Kiwi.  In the morning we performed to a packed hall of grandparents and tonight we have the big event. The first show was so good it made Mrs Bates cry!

Finished masks!

Today we finished our pest masks by adding elastic to make them fit to our heads properly. We also added fine details like wrinkles, teeth and snarls to make them look even scarier!

Production Masks

Today we started making our pest masks look scary for the show next week. We blacked around the eyes and have started adding teeth! After our run through this morning we are all excited and a lot more confident.

Visit from Gavin Bishop

Today we had a visit from Gavin Bishop. He told us about his childhood and read from his book, Piano Rock. We asked him lots of questions and then gave him a signed copy of our class book, and he gave us a signed copy of his book.

Kauri Class Dance

This is our first proper run through of our class dance for production. Thank you Whaea Meg for filming and sharing it with us.

It still needs a lot of practise. We reflected on what we needed to improve and came up with the following:

  • Pests walking slower and hunched over with claws out
  • Pests stepping slowly, in time with the beat
  • Not pushing kiwis roughly
  • Kiwis flapping harder
  • Not turning our backs to the audience
  • staying with our group
  • waiting quietly to go on stage

Production Masks

This week we started painting the base coats onto our masks. We researched the colours of our animals on the internet to get a realistic colour on first. Tracey and Ray came in to help us paint our masks and we really appreciated their help.

Passion Projects

Today we had passion projects. The activities that we did were:
  • dancing with Whaea Petrina
  • costume making with Michelle
  • marble run with Mr Pickard
  • making pikelets with Mrs Bates
  • movie making with Whaea Meg
  • music with Mrs Fleming
  • science with Mrs A
  • manuka planting with Mr A
Kauri class thought that everything was fun, except for Manuka planting with Mr A! 😏

Below are some photos of what we did in Kauri class.

Breakfast Club

Yesterday Mr A and Willy moved the duck houses up into the pond area in preparation for our eight Khaki Campbell ducks we are getting this week. We hope they will start laying lots of eggs soon so that we can have lots of scrambled egg with our toast for breakfast club each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
